Southland Conference Day 2 Washed Out, McNeese State and Nicholls Reschedule for Saturday
Heavy rain forced the postponement of Day 2 of the Southland Conference’s Lake Charles Bracket Friday, delaying pivotal matchups as teams regroup for a decisive clash Saturday at 2 p.m. MT at Joe Miller Field.
The second-seeded McNeese State Cowgirls (36-19) and No. 3 Nicholls Colonels (30-21) will now meet in the winners’ bracket after both emerged victorious in Thursday’s openings. McNeese edged Stephen F. Austin 5-4, while Nicholls defeated Northwestern State 7-4 to set the stage for a high-stakes rematch.
Postseason Momentum and Rain Delay
McNeese head coach James Landreneau acknowledged,
“There isn’t much we could do today. We will just use the day to rest, recover, and get ready for Saturday. We are excited to play.”
The weather interruption means all four teams received just an hour of hitting practice inside McNeese’s facility Friday, maintaining readiness despite the delay.
The postponement comes at a crucial time as McNeese looks to avenge a 1-5 conference start against Nicholls earlier in the season. Those three losses were tightly contested, separated by only four total runs, fueling the Cowgirls’ strong finish with 11 wins in their last 12 conference games — edging Nicholls for the No. 2 seed and the advantage of hosting the bracket.
Maddie Weeks, a senior on McNeese, emphasized the significance of home support:
“We love to play at home in front of our fans. They give us energy.”
This opportunity to play on familiar turf could help tilt the balance against Nicholls, who previously outperformed McNeese’s offense with strong pitching and timely hits.
Players’ Health and Upcoming Clash
The break may aid McNeese’s injured player Nyjah Fontenot, who is slowly returning from a knee injury after serving as designated player during Thursday’s win. Landreneau added,
“We are easing her back into it.”
Meanwhile, the losers’ bracket elimination game Saturday morning at 11 a.m. MT will feature seventh-seeded Stephen F. Austin (29-25) seeking their 30-win milestone against sixth-seed Northwestern State (24-28), with stakes high as the winner stays alive in the double-elimination format.
Looking Ahead: Title Game and Stakes
The Southland Conference title game is scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m., with a potential second game to follow if necessary, keeping fans on edge as teams battle for supremacy over the weekend.
Coach Landreneau remains optimistic about his team’s preparedness:
“I think we are ready. I like where we are at and how we are playing now.”
As the weather clears, McNeese hopes the delay will only sharpen their focus on defeating Nicholls and advancing deeper into the postseason.
This postponement and refreshed matchup highlight the intensity and unpredictability of college baseball, capturing attention from sports enthusiasts statewide and nationally who follow tournament push and player comebacks.
