Sandisk has introduced the Extreme Fit, claimed to be the world’s smallest 1TB USB-C SSD flash drive. This compact device is designed to remain plugged into laptops without needing to be removed, providing a convenient storage solution for users on the go.
The design of the Extreme Fit is notably practical. It features an L-shaped form that slots into a USB-C port, protruding just slightly to keep it flush with the laptop surface. This ensures that the lid of the laptop can close without obstruction, while still allowing easy access to the drive. The compact size is comparable to that of a wireless dongle, making it highly portable.
Sandisk markets the Extreme Fit as a “leave-in design,” indicating its potential for use as a permanent storage upgrade for computers. However, users should exercise caution when transporting their laptops. Although the thin profile reduces the risk of snagging on other objects, USB-C connectors are delicate and may be susceptible to damage if subjected to excessive force.
The Extreme Fit is available in multiple capacities: 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. While the high-capacity model is particularly notable, all versions utilize USB 3.2 Gen 1 technology, offering transfer speeds of up to 400MB/s. The 64GB variant has a slightly lower speed of 300MB/s. While these speeds may not be the fastest on the market, they are adequate for the intended use of the drive.
In comparison, Suneast released a smaller equivalent drive in May, which offers up to 512GB of storage but is currently only available in Japan. In contrast, Sandisk’s Extreme Fit is readily available for order in the United States and other regions, with prices starting at $15.99 for the 64GB version and reaching $117.99 for the full 1TB capacity.
The reflective surface of the Extreme Fit adds a touch of aesthetic appeal, catching light at various angles, although its boxy design is taller than it is thick. This thoughtful design minimizes the risk of catching on a laptop lid, further enhancing its usability as a permanent storage accessory.
As portable storage solutions continue to evolve, the release of Sandisk’s Extreme Fit sets a new benchmark for compact design and functionality in the realm of USB devices.
