Noah Chavez delivered a masterful pitching performance to keep Chiles High School’s playoff hopes alive, shutting out rival Lincoln High School 1-0 Saturday and forcing a decisive Game 3 in the Class 5A regional semifinals.
Facing elimination after a tough 8-3 loss in the opening game of their doubleheader, Chiles leaned on Chavez, their senior ace, who stifled Lincoln’s lineup by working 6 2/3 scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts. His precision and poise kept Trojans hitters off balance as the Timberwolves scraped out critical base runners but failed to solve Chavez’s dominant pitching.
Chavez, who boasts an impressive 0.81 ERA and 90 strikeouts this season, plays a vital role for top-seeded Chiles. After graduation, he will continue his baseball career at Tallahassee State College. “I can’t be any more excited about getting another shot in the playoffs this year,” Chavez said after the game. “Hopefully we get the win tomorrow and play another game.”
The only run came in the third inning when Preston Ritchie doubled to bring in JR Thompson. Lincoln mounted several threatening rallies but were repeatedly turned away by Chavez and sharp defensive plays from the Timberwolves.
Conor Borges secured the last out of the game to preserve the shutout, with the series now tied at one game apiece heading into the winner-take-all showdown scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m..
“The seniors got to know that they maybe have only one more game left, so if you don’t play as hard as you can, there’s no point in going at all,” Chavez said. “Just got to win it.”
Regional Playoff Picture Intensifies
The winner of the Chiles-Lincoln Game 3 will face the victor of the ongoing Niceville-Mosley matchup in the regional final, escalating the stakes for this already fierce rivalry. Across the Big Bend region, competitive battles continue:
- St. John Paul II won both games against Covenant, 7-6 and 7-2 respectively.
- Union County swept Madison County with wins of 7-6 and 10-7.
- Lafayette gray doggedly edged Aucilla Christian in a grueling three-game series, winning the finale 12-8.
This weekend’s high-pressure regional matchups are drawing intense local interest with playoff dreams on the line. The Chiles-Lincoln series is a highlight clash that promises high drama when they meet Sunday for all the marbles.
What’s Next
Chiles and Lincoln will square off at 1 p.m. Sunday for the deciding game at a regional semifinal site. Fans and scouts alike are eager to see if Chavez can carry his shutout momentum into the winner-take-all game or if Lincoln will clinch the series and advance.
The stakes are clear: only one team will move forward toward the regional final and deeper postseason glory. Baseball enthusiasts across the region—and those tracking high school athletics nationally—will want to tune in for what promises to be a thrilling conclusion.
“Sometimes you’ve got to know when you can or cannot strike somebody out and what their weaknesses are,” Chavez said. “It’s hard to hit spots sometimes and going straight at them is my biggest thing.”
With Chávez’s relentless strike-throwing and a resilient Timberwolves defense, Chiles is fighting to extend their season with everything on the line.
