Florida Man Charged for Animal Cruelty After Puppy Found Drug-Intoxicated
John Burt Sparhawk, 62, was arrested Thursday after authorities discovered his five-month-old puggle, Inga, suffering from cocaine exposure in Jensen Beach, Florida. The shocking case unfolded late at night on April 28 when neighbors reported hearing the puppy’s desperate cries.
A witness, Casey Rosica, told police she was woken by the frightened yelps and found Sparhawk holding Inga about six and a half feet off the ground by her leash. Authorities confirmed the puppy was in visible distress with dilated pupils, a classic sign of cocaine intoxication, according to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek.
Puppy Rushed to Emergency Vet, Cocaine Found in Her System
Inga was rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic where doctors determined the young dog had cocaine in her system and was suffering seizures. The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast took custody of Inga after treatment, reporting she is now recovering physically and emotionally in their care.
Sheriff Budensiek described the incident as “disgusting” and condemned the abuse, noting the puppy’s pupils were “blown” similar to human drug overdose symptoms.
Neighbor’s Account Reveals Startling Abuse
Rosica and another witness told police Sparhawk was seen repeatedly lifting and dropping the puppy while wrapping a leash around her neck. The dog appeared to be choking and unable to bark. When questioned, Sparhawk claimed Inga was having a seizure possibly caused by ingesting mushrooms or toxic plants, but he never checked on her condition after the incident.
“It’s disgusting in the sense that this individual went out there and was strangling his dog,” said Sheriff Budensiek.
Authorities Take Swift Action to Protect Puppy
After the incident, deputies obtained a warrant and arrested Sparhawk, who later bonded out. Meanwhile, Inga remains safe at the Humane Society. Deputies also removed Sparhawk from the organization’s property after he reportedly returned and threatened staff.
Investigators continue to treat Inga as evidence and are actively working to determine the full circumstances behind the cocaine exposure and abuse.
What’s Next?
It is currently unclear when Sparhawk will next appear in court, but authorities have ordered him to stay away from Inga and the Humane Society. The case highlights urgent concerns about animal abuse connected to substance abuse and raises increasing calls for vigilance and intervention.
This disturbing animal cruelty event is unfolding just as communities nationwide push for stronger protections for pets endangered by drugs and neglect in homes.
The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast continues to provide critical care and rehabilitation for Inga, whose rescue underscores the crucial role of neighbors and emergency responders in saving vulnerable animals.
