130th Airlift Wing Returns Home After Successful Mission in Africa

UPDATE: The 130th Airlift Wing has just returned to McLaughlin Air Base in Charleston, W.Va., after a successful deployment to the Horn of Africa. Emotions ran high as families eagerly awaited the arrival of their loved ones, marking a significant homecoming for the airmen who had been away since November 2025.

Parents and children gathered at the base, with youngsters wearing ear protection while craning their necks to catch a glimpse of the C-130J aircraft. The atmosphere was electric, filled with anticipation as airmen disembarked to reunite with their families. Captain Mike Adler expressed the joy of returning home, stating, “There’s nothing like it, it makes their day, it makes our day, it’s been a long time. Happy to be home and it’s time to make up for some lost time for sure.”

The airmen flew into varying airfields around the Horn of Africa, delivering crucial supplies. Airman Thomas Staggs, who was also present at the reunion holding his young son Sawyer, shared, “It’s winter over there, so it was a little bit cooler so it wasn’t too bad.” Staggs missed his son’s first Christmas but planned a special celebration before his deployment.

Another airman, Ben Foster, also shared his heartfelt story. He held his son, who was just two months old when he deployed just before Thanksgiving. “It’s great, he’s grown up a lot since I left him. He’s like 20 pounds heavier,” Foster said, highlighting the personal sacrifices made during their service.

This mission marks a significant milestone for the 130th Airlift Wing, as it was the first operational deployment of the newly acquired C-130J aircraft. The unit transitioned from the older C-130H3 models to the advanced C-130J-30s starting in 2021, enhancing their operational capabilities.

The successful completion of this mission not only reinforces the air wing’s commitment to supporting global operations but also showcases the advancements made in their aircraft technology. As these airmen return to their families, communities are reminded of the sacrifices made by military personnel and their loved ones.

As the 130th Airlift Wing settles back into their home base, attention now turns to upcoming training sessions and community events designed to reconnect the airmen with their local communities. The stories of reunion and resilience continue to inspire, reminding all of the importance of service and family connection.
