Tripwire Interactive Lays Off 23 Employees Amid Industry Shifts

Tripwire Interactive, the studio behind the popular game franchise *Killing Floor*, has announced layoffs affecting 23 employees. This decision reflects the company’s need to “align with business realities” as it aims to stay focused on its creative goals amidst ongoing changes in the gaming industry. The Georgia-based developer shared this news in a statement on LinkedIn, emphasizing its commitment to continuing progress on current projects, which include both internally developed titles and those under its publishing label.

In a separate post, former producer Seher Basak noted that the layoffs impacted roles in quality assurance, art, engineering, and customer support. Tripwire stated, “This was an incredibly difficult decision and was heavily deliberated given the impact on those affected, along with the overall team.” The studio expressed deep gratitude for the contributions of the departing employees, acknowledging the significant impact they had on the company’s projects and culture.

Tripwire Interactive reaffirmed its dedication to providing high-quality gaming experiences and supporting its player community. The studio thanked its team members, partners, and the gaming community for their understanding during this period of transition.

Company Background and Recent Changes

Founded in 2005 by John Gibson and Alan Wilson, Tripwire Interactive has established itself as a notable player in the gaming industry. Following Gibson’s resignation as CEO in 2021 due to controversial comments, Wilson stepped in as interim CEO. In 2024, former CFO Matthew LoPilato was promoted to the position of CEO.

In 2022, Tripwire was acquired by the Embracer Group, which had previously operated under its subsidiary, Saber Interactive. Embracer sold Saber Interactive for $247 million in 2024, while Tripwire remained under Embracer’s ownership. This acquisition placed Tripwire alongside other game studios such as Zen Studios, 4A Games, and Beamdog.

As the gaming industry continues to evolve, Tripwire Interactive’s recent layoffs highlight the broader challenges facing developers in maintaining profitability and adapting to market demands. The studio’s commitment to its projects and community remains strong, even as it navigates these difficult changes.
