URGENT UPDATE: A mother of two, Patricia Villa, was tragically shot and killed while working at a storage facility in Covina, California on November 2, 2023. The suspect, identified as Juan Nava, a 66-year-old customer at the facility, is now in police custody as family and friends mourn her loss.
Witnesses report that hundreds gathered for an emotional vigil on Saturday, demonstrating the profound impact Patricia had on her community. “She was a dedicated employee, an awesome coworker, and somebody who brought light to everybody,” said Deann Pancheri, a close friend. Patricia’s father, Frank Villa, expressed his heartbreak over the senseless violence, questioning, “Why did this have to happen to her?”
The tragic incident unfolded around 5 p.m. when security footage captured a masked man entering the facility just before closing time. Frank explained how the suspect parked his car, donned a mask, armed himself, and entered the facility. When family members couldn’t reach Patricia, they rushed to the site and discovered her lying inside, having been shot five times.
Authorities utilized facial recognition technology to identify Nava, who reportedly displayed signs of a mental health crisis. “They searched his house and found many arms, including automatic weapons and pistols,” Frank added.
As the community reels from this shocking event, a GoFundMe page has been established to support Patricia’s family during this difficult time. “I don’t know how anybody could plan for something like this… it was just that random,” Pancheri remarked.
Nava remains in custody with no bail set. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 9, 2023. Families and friends continue to call for justice as they reflect on the life of a beloved mother, friend, and colleague.
