Jarrett “JT” Thomas has made a significant life change, relocating to Bali and declaring himself “retired” following his exit from the reality series Southern Charm. On November 2, 2024, the 40-year-old former reality star shared his decision on Instagram, stating, “Today’s the first day of my journey in life.” He expressed that he had “pulled the rip chord” and was embracing this new chapter after a lifetime in the United States.
In his announcement, JT hinted that the political climate in America influenced his choice to leave South Carolina. “Honestly, I don’t even think it needs [an] explanation. I think I’ve just been thinking about doing this like many of you have. So, I said, ‘Enough’s enough,’” he explained, suggesting a desire for a fresh start in a different environment.
Life in Bali and Challenges Ahead
JT is in the process of selling “everything” he owns in the U.S., including his business and real estate assets. While he remains open to the possibility of returning to America if “things become normal again,” he is currently focused on settling into his new life in Bali. “I don’t know a single person,” he admitted, acknowledging the challenges of leaving his friends and family behind.
He has already secured housing in Bali for the month of November and confirmed that he would not return to Charleston for Thanksgiving. “Bali is incredible. It’s paradise. The reality is,” he stated, although he recognized the importance of building a community to avoid feelings of isolation. “If I don’t make friends and build a community, sooner or later I’m going to feel lonely,” he remarked, emphasizing the emotional complexities of starting anew.
Departure from Southern Charm and Future Plans
JT’s departure from Southern Charm occurred nearly a year prior to his move, just ahead of the season 10 premiere. He announced his resignation from the show via Instagram in November 2023, stating, “I no longer wish to participate in any ways moving forward with the TV show.” He cited the need to recover both physically and mentally from a challenging year.
During his time on the show, JT faced numerous conflicts, including public disputes with cast members such as **Austen Kroll** and **Madison LeCroy**. He received considerable backlash for allegations concerning Kroll’s fidelity and for insinuating that LeCroy’s husband was jealous of their interactions. Furthermore, he was accused of racist behavior towards longtime friend and brief love interest **Venita Aspen**, claims he has denied.
Despite the controversies, JT indicated a willingness to take responsibility for his actions by offering partial apologies during the season 10 reunion.
As he embarks on this new journey in Bali, JT Thomas is embracing the uncertainty of his future, stating, “It’s not easy to start over but it’s exciting.” He remains committed to building a new life, even as he navigates the complexities of leaving behind his previous life in Charleston.
The upcoming season 11 of Southern Charm is set to premiere on Bravo on November 19, 2024, at 21:00 ET, providing a platform for the remaining cast to continue their stories without JT.
