Rodney Nelson delivered an exceptional performance on November 4, 2023, as he rushed for a career-high 244 yards on 34 carries, contributing significantly to Monmouth University’s convincing 35-7 victory over Bryant University. The Hawks, currently ranked ninth in the FCS coaches’ poll, improved their record to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the Coastal Athletic Association, marking their sixth consecutive win.
Monmouth’s offense showcased its strength early in the game, scoring 21 points in the first half. Nelson not only excelled on the ground but also made a notable impact in the passing game, recording two receptions for 62 yards and scoring three total touchdowns. One of his key plays was a 49-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Frankie Weaver, which occurred with just 21 seconds left in the first half, extending Monmouth’s lead to 14 points at the break.
The Hawks’ defense also played a crucial role in the game, limiting Bryant to a mere 226 total yards and preventing any turnovers. The Bulldogs struggled to maintain drives, converting only 4 of 13 third downs and 1 of 3 fourth downs. Despite Bryant’s efforts, including a passing performance from quarterback Frankie Weaver, who completed 14 of 19 passes for 218 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, the team was unable to turn the tide.
Nelson’s explosive speed was highlighted when he broke free for a 69-yard rush to the end zone during Monmouth’s second drive, marking the longest play of the game. This showcased not only his individual talent but also the effectiveness of Monmouth’s offensive strategy.
On the other side, the Bulldogs, now at 2-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play, have faced significant challenges, having lost six straight games following a promising start that included a victory over FBS member UMass. Zyheem Collick led Bryant’s receiving corps with three catches for 69 yards, but the team struggled to find momentum against Monmouth’s robust defense.
As the season progresses, Monmouth looks to maintain its winning streak and strengthen its position within the Coastal Athletic Association, while Bryant aims to regroup and find a way back to winning form.
