UPDATE: In an inspiring moment for Esko, Minnesota, Marisa Pender has reflected on her remarkable journey in high school sports, culminating in her significant achievements at Esko High School. Pender, who was a standout athlete and pivotal member of her cross country team, expressed her gratitude for the “euphoric moments” that shaped her character and leadership skills.
Just announced, Pender shared her insights on the long-term benefits of high school sports, emphasizing the invaluable lessons learned through athletics. “It’s such a valuable tool for character and leadership development,” she stated, highlighting the dedication of her coaches and the supportive community surrounding Esko athletics.
Marisa, the eldest of four daughters in the Shady family, moved to Esko at the age of six and quickly became involved in various sports, including gymnastics, soccer, and basketball. By her seventh grade, she eagerly joined the cross country team, despite her mother’s initial surprise. The Esko girls’ team experienced remarkable success, qualifying for the Minnesota State High School League cross country championships every year of Pender’s six-year varsity career.
In a stunning turnaround, Pender’s sophomore year goal to “medal” turned into a state championship victory. “I was more surprised than anyone. I never felt as good as I did in that race. It was just the most euphoric moment,” she recalled. The thrill of winning was matched during her senior year when the team won the state title by a staggering 35 points over their closest competitor.
Pender’s contributions to Esko’s athletic success extended beyond cross country. She was an integral part of the track and field relays, and she competed in every event except discus and shot put throughout her high school career. Pender was also a three-year starter on the basketball team, although her team faced tough competition from Rebekah Dahlman’s Braham High School, which blocked their path to the state tournament.
While balancing her academic pursuits, Marisa took advantage of the Postsecondary Education Options program, completing nearly two years of college by the time she graduated in 2013. She earned 18 varsity letters and was a 14-time state medalist, achieving her dream of competing in Division I sports by accepting a track and field scholarship to South Dakota State University.
Though her college career was marred by injuries, she still showcased her talent with impressive performances during her sophomore and junior years. Today, Marisa is thriving in the world of CrossFit, training alongside her husband, Michael Pender, and raising their two children, Jackson and Kiara.
In a heartfelt reflection, Pender stated, “High school and athletics laid the foundation for who I am. They provided me with the Finnish word ‘sisu.’ It’s determination, perseverance, grit, and tenacity.”
As Marisa continues to inspire others through her journey, her story serves as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of high school athletics on personal development and community spirit. Stay tuned for more updates on her journey and insights into how athletes like Marisa are shaping their futures.
