URGENT UPDATE: Over 850,000 people in Arizona are facing an immediate loss of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits starting November 1, 2025, due to a federal funding freeze. This alarming development comes as the U.S. government remains shut down, leaving many low-income families in a precarious situation.
The Arizona Department of Economic Security has confirmed that approved SNAP recipients will not receive benefits next month “until further notice from the USDA.” With the stakes so high, community organizations and local businesses are mobilizing now to provide essential support to those impacted.
In response to this urgent need, the Arizona Food Bank Network is stepping up. Residents can find food resources through their Find a Food Bank map, which connects individuals with local food pantries and meal services. The network offers options like food boxes and onsite meals, ensuring that vulnerable communities can access the nutrition they need.
Local businesses are also making a difference. Baked Chemistry Vegan, a beloved vendor at Phoenix Farmers’ Markets, is launching a pay-what-you-can meal called the “Chemistry Community Plate.” This initiative, available every Wednesday and Saturday, offers nourishing meals to anyone in need. Emetesha Newble, the founder, shared her personal connection to food insecurity, stating, “It’s not just something I’ve heard about… It’s something I’ve lived.”
Additionally, DoorDash is implementing an “Emergency Food Response” plan. Beginning November 1, the company will waive merchant fees for over 300 Project DASH partners and will cover delivery fees for 300,000 grocery orders for SNAP recipients. This initiative allows individuals to order from major retailers like Sprouts and Dollar General without incurring extra charges.
Meanwhile, King Pigeon Thrift and Vintage, a thrift store located at Central Avenue and Camelback Road, is offering sandwich kits and non-perishable items to those in need. Starting at 9 a.m. on November 1, anyone can come to pick up food, with no questions asked. They are also encouraging donations of non-perishable items, offering discounts and gift cards to those who contribute.
From November 1 to November 8, LoveBite Dumplings will provide free meals for anyone with a SNAP or EBT card from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The local dumpling shop is committed to supporting their community, despite the potential strain on their business. Their message emphasizes solidarity: “We believe now is the time to step up for our community.”
As Arizona faces a potential food crisis, the call to action from local organizations and businesses highlights the community’s resilience. Officials are urging the USDA to release the necessary funding to restore SNAP benefits, but with the clock ticking, residents are encouraged to take advantage of available resources.
For individuals and families affected by this SNAP benefit freeze, immediate support is available through various channels. Community members are advised to reach out to local food banks, participate in programs like the Chemistry Community Plate, and utilize services like DoorDash to secure necessary food supplies.
As the situation continues to develop, the community’s response is a testament to the strength and solidarity of Arizonans in times of crisis. Stay tuned for updates on the status of SNAP benefits and ongoing support efforts across the state.
