URGENT UPDATE: Edgewater offensive lineman Ben Jones, formerly known as Ben Bankowitz, has just been selected to participate in the prestigious US Army All-American Bowl, set to take place on December 21, 2023, in Frisco, Texas. This recognition marks a significant milestone for the talented athlete, who has been a cornerstone of the Eagles’ undefeated season.
Jones, ranked No. 43 in the Sentinel’s 2026 Central Florida Super60, expressed his gratitude upon receiving the honor, stating, “It feels really good. I try to not think about it too much, just give the glory to God, but it does feel really good.” His name change honors his stepfather, Eric Jones, reflecting his humility and dedication to family.
As a key player on the Eagles’ offensive line, Jones has started since his freshman year, contributing to Edgewater’s impressive 9-0 record and championship title in Class 7A District 5. The team is gearing up for their next challenge against Boone in the highly anticipated Barrel Game rivalry on October 30, 2023.
“This year is going really well, obviously, 9-0, but we’re not close to done. In our minds, we still got six more games,” said Jones, emphasizing the team’s commitment to maintaining their winning streak.
Jones has honed his skills over the years, becoming one of Florida’s top offensive linemen. He attributes much of his success to the importance of technique, stating, “Technique is one of the most pivotal components of being an offensive lineman.” His agility and skill have not gone unnoticed, leading to recruitment by Appalachian State, where he committed on June 17.
The Mountaineers’ offensive line coach, Allen Mogridge, played a crucial role in Jones’ decision, as he believes App State is building something special. “For me, it was really the culture of the team and the coaching staff,” Jones noted, adding, “I feel like App State is overachieving with the coaches they have.”
Under the guidance of first-year head coach Patrick Browning, Jones has thrived this season. “I don’t have enough good words to say about Coach Browning. He’s a great coach, a football guru,” Jones remarked, highlighting the strong camaraderie among teammates that has kept the team united during a time of transition.
With the Edgewater program facing potential upheaval after the departure of former head coach Cameron Duke, Jones and his teammates held meetings to ensure they remained focused. “We had team meetings and we talked every day about how we had to have the whole team stay on track during the offseason,” he explained. “It’s working out so far right now, so I’m glad we did.”
As the Eagles prepare for the end of the regular season, all eyes will be on Jones and his performance in the Army All-American Bowl. This honor not only highlights his individual talent but also the strength of the Edgewater team as they strive for continued success. Fans and supporters are eager to see how Jones will represent his school and community on such a recognized platform.
