Prada Launches Limited-Edition Kolhapuri-Inspired Sandals and Major Artisan Training Program
Prada has announced the immediate global launch of a limited-edition sandal collection inspired by India’s iconic Kolhapuri chappals alongside a large-scale artisan training initiative aimed at preserving this historic craft. The collection, officially unveiled on April 27, is now available across 40 Prada boutiques worldwide and via Prada’s online platform.
The sandals are handcrafted by artisans in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, regions known for their centuries-old tradition of Kolhapuri chappal production. This project merges traditional craftsmanship with Prada’s luxury design ethos, using premium materials to modernize and elevate a classic Indian style for a global audience.
Preserving Tradition with Skilled Artisan Training
Alongside the commercial launch, Prada has committed to a three-year, fully funded training program that will support 180 artisans across eight districts where Kolhapuri chappals have been traditionally manufactured. The program offers structured six-month modules blending design education, technical upskilling, and market-focused training designed to help artisans adapt to evolving consumer trends.
The training is a collaborative effort involving Sant Rohidas Leather Industries, Charmakar Development Corporation, and Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation Ltd—all government-supported organizations dedicated to sustaining India’s leather industry.
Courses will be held in partnership with premier Indian institutes, including the National Institute of Fashion Technology and the Karnataka Institute of Leather & Fashion Technology. Artisans will gain hands-on experience in modern studios outfitted with the latest tools and materials, equipping them to innovate while preserving cultural heritage.
“Education is a fundamental pillar in ensuring that craftsmanship remains a living practice,” said Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility. “This program translates a shared cultural dialogue into concrete opportunities for learning and growth.”
Why This Matters Now
Prada’s initiative highlights a growing trend within the global luxury sector that emphasizes pairing heritage crafts with contemporary design. This dual approach not only creates unique products but also invests in sustainable development by empowering local communities and preserving traditional knowledge. For Indian artisans, the program opens new avenues for economic stability and global market integration.
For American audiences, this move underscores an international commitment to cultural preservation backed by high-profile global brands—a reminder of how traditional craftsmanship continues to influence and innovate within the luxury fashion industry worldwide.
The Road Ahead
This launch sets a precedent for future collaborations between luxury brands and artisan communities, blending cultural respect with commercial success. Prada’s investment in artisan training ensures that these historic skills will evolve rather than disappear, forging a sustainable path forward grounded in education and market relevance.
As the sandals reach boutiques in the US and online, consumers can expect a fusion of authentic Indian heritage and contemporary luxury design. Meanwhile, the artisan training program will continue developing talent in India over the next three years, shaping the future of handcrafted luxury footwear.
