Mt. Hope Aims for Division II Championship After Semifinal Win

Mt. Hope’s boys basketball team is set to compete for the Division II championship after a hard-fought semifinal victory over Cranston West on March 2, 2024. The Huskies secured a 59-53 win, showcasing their resilience and talent, despite moving up a level from last season’s successful campaign in Division III.

The semifinal match took place at the Amica Mutual Pavilion, where Mt. Hope displayed a strong performance led by players like Jacob Tamke and Bam Adams. Tamke’s pivotal three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter helped the team establish a significant lead, while his critical free throws in the final moments ensured their advancement to the finals. Adams electrified the crowd with a spectacular dunk, adding to the team’s momentum.

Mt. Hope’s journey has been marked by an impressive 18-game winning streak against league opponents. The team maintained this winning habit during a challenging game where they faced tough shooting conditions. Despite a slow start, they managed to keep Cranston West at bay, demonstrating their ability to perform under pressure. “The crowd really gives us the most energy,” noted Maleaq Roderick, highlighting the importance of their supporters.

The Huskies entered halftime with a 29-21 lead, fueled by a 9-2 run that underscored their dominance early in the game. Tamke’s jumper from the left side extended their lead to 49-37 in the fourth quarter, forcing Cranston West to call a timeout. This strategic pause, however, could not shift the momentum in the Falcons’ favor.

Cranston West, who had recently won five straight games, attempted to close the gap but struggled with missed opportunities at the free-throw line. The Falcons managed to reduce the deficit to a single possession but were unable to seize the lead, leaving them to contend with Mt. Hope’s defensive strategy.

Looking ahead, Mt. Hope is preparing for the championship game scheduled for March 7, 2024, where they will face either St. Raphael or Burrillville. Adams expressed confidence in the team’s abilities, stating, “We have all the confidence in the world. But we can’t get comfortable. We have to stay poised and be able to play our ball.”

With both teams eager to secure their place in the finals, the championship match promises to be an exciting showdown. As Mt. Hope continues to build on its success, the team remains focused on their goal of capturing the Division II title, while fans eagerly await the outcome.

In terms of statistics, Mt. Hope finished the game with a total of 19 field goals and made 18 of 31 free throws, while Cranston West managed 22 field goals and 5 of 11 free throws. The Huskies’ impressive performance highlights their potential as they advance in the tournament.

As the excitement builds for the upcoming championship, the Mt. Hope Huskies are determined to continue their winning streak and bring home another title.
