Residents across Long Island are expressing growing frustration over unplowed sidewalks next to bus stops in the aftermath of a significant snowstorm that struck on March 10, 2024. Many have reached out to News 12, highlighting safety concerns as they navigate snow-covered pathways.
In Bay Shore, for instance, the sidewalk adjacent to a bus stop on Main Street, near CVS at 480 Montauk Highway, remains completely buried in snow. Local resident Ashley Slide voiced her concerns, stating, “I’m scared I’m going to slip and fall. That is a safety hazard.” This sentiment echoes among others who report walking on the street to access the bus stop, increasing the risk of accidents.
Another concerned resident, Charlie Gordon from Islip, emphasized the challenges faced by those with mobility impairments, saying, “I worry about the people who use wheelchairs.” The situation has prompted immediate action as crews were observed shoveling snow just hours after inquiries were made by News 12.
Responsibility and Response from Local Authorities
The Town of Oyster Bay clarified that property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks adjacent to their properties. A spokesperson for CVS stated that they were working to clear the sidewalk leading to the bus stop as quickly as possible. They noted that they had been actively clearing snow throughout the storm but faced challenges from state Department of Transportation (DOT) plows, which continued to bury the sidewalk after initial efforts.
A representative from the state DOT confirmed their responsibility for plowing state highways, but indicated that local municipalities can delegate sidewalk clearing to property owners. The ongoing issue reflects broader concerns about street maintenance and accessibility in winter weather.
Residents are left to navigate hazardous conditions while local authorities and businesses work to address the situation. As the snow begins to melt, the hope is that sidewalks will soon be safe for all commuters.
