Project Fire Buddies Wins $60K Gala to Support Sick Children

UPDATE: Project Fire Buddies has just been awarded a gala event valued at $60,000 at the new Hollywood Casino Joliet, a significant boost for their mission to bring joy to children battling life-threatening illnesses. This exciting development is expected to increase community support and funding for the nonprofit, which has touched the lives of countless families across Illinois.

Founded by firefighter/paramedic Kurt DeGroot in Oak Forest, Illinois, Project Fire Buddies has expanded to over 170 chapters in 15 states, providing personalized gifts and emotional support to critically ill children. From toys and games to dream trips to places like Disney World, the organization tailors its efforts to meet individual needs, making a profound impact on children facing unimaginable challenges.

The gala, set to take place in the fall of 2025, will host 400 guests at the casino’s new 10,000-square-foot event center. It will include food, non-alcoholic beverages, table wine service, A/V production, and event staffing, coupled with 40 hours of volunteer support from the Hollywood Joliet team. “We received dozens of entries from local nonprofits,” said Ruben Warren, vice president and general manager of Hollywood Joliet. “Project Fire Buddies stood out for its long-standing commitment and the positive impact it has on families.”

This gala marks a critical opportunity for Project Fire Buddies to raise essential funds for its ongoing efforts. DeGroot expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “It shows they care about the most vulnerable in their community.” The event is expected to draw significant donations, further enhancing their ability to serve sick children and their families.

In addition to the gala, Project Fire Buddies will host its annual event on February 7, 2025, at the Tinley Park Convention Center, expecting 1,500 attendees. “This is a night out for families who deserve it,” DeGroot emphasized, highlighting the emotional importance of their work.

The organization’s grassroots beginnings reflect a deep commitment to community service. DeGroot’s family has been instrumental, often sacrificing personal gifts to ensure that more resources go to those in need. “This would have failed were it not for my family,” he noted, emphasizing the collective effort behind this vital cause.

As this story develops, the community is encouraged to rally behind Project Fire Buddies, whose work not only brings joy but also provides crucial support to families enduring difficult times. Stay tuned for further updates on the gala and its impact on local families.
