Liberty Common School has received a significant boost in its expansion efforts with a federal grant of nearly $1.8 million. This funding is designated for the ongoing construction of the school’s new junior high campus, located in east Fort Collins. The announcement, made by a school spokesperson, highlights the institution’s commitment to enhancing educational facilities for its growing student population.
The new junior high officially opened for seventh and eighth graders in the fall of 2023, utilizing one of two commercial buildings at 1825 Sharp Point Drive. Plans are underway to expand into a second building, with the goal of completing additional facilities by the 2026-27 school year. During a tour in August, co-founder and Headmaster Bob Schaffer outlined the vision for the school, which aims to foster a conducive learning environment amid increasing enrollment numbers.
The current phase of renovations is focused on creating essential facilities, including a gymnasium, locker rooms, and academic labs, among others. According to school spokesperson Callie Cooper, these enhancements will not only support academic endeavors but also cater to students with special needs. The renovations are an integral part of the school’s strategy to accommodate a projected enrollment of up to 350 students for the junior high.
Liberty Common operates as a public charter school under the governance of the Poudre School District, maintaining independence in its operations. For the 2025-26 school year, the school reported an enrollment of 1,610 students across its four campuses, reflecting an increase of 94 students from the previous year, according to data from the Colorado Department of Education.
The establishment of the junior high school is a response to the rising enrollment figures, particularly following the opening of a new elementary campus in west Fort Collins for students in kindergarten through sixth grade in 2022. Schaffer previously noted that this expansion was essential to mitigate overcrowding at the high school level, ensuring that educational quality remains a priority as the student body continues to grow.
This grant underscores the commitment to improving educational infrastructure and providing quality learning environments for students in Fort Collins. As Liberty Common School progresses with its expansion plans, it aims not only to meet current demands but to prepare for future growth in the community.
