Fukuoka Island City, an artificial island off the coast of Higashi ward in Fukuoka, Japan, celebrated its 20th anniversary in October 2023. Initially labeled an “unsellable artificial island,” the 1.55 square mile area has transformed into a thriving community with over 16,000 residents. The island was created as part of a municipal reclamation project, utilizing sediment excavated from the seabed of Hakata Bay. Construction began in 1994, and the first residents moved in by December 2005. Initially, living on the island posed challenges; residents had to travel off the island for daily necessities due to a lack of supermarkets or convenience stores.
Key Developments Over Two Decades
The situation began to improve significantly with the opening of an elementary school in 2007, followed by a junior high school the next year. The establishment of the Fukuoka Children’s Hospital in 2014 marked a pivotal moment in the community’s development. This led to increased bus routes, new high-rise buildings lining the streets, and a surge of businesses drawn to the area, supported by city government subsidies.
The evolving seaside townscape has garnered international attention, making properties with scenic views increasingly desirable. Real estate professionals report that as much as 40% of some condominium units are occupied by foreign residents. The introduction of an international school has further diversified the community, catering to families from various backgrounds.
At a recent news conference, Soichiro Takashima, the mayor of Fukuoka, expressed his pride in the community’s growth. “It’s deeply moving to think that children are being born and growing up here. It has become a green and wonderful town, exceeding what we imagined back then,” he stated, reflecting on his 15 years of involvement in the project.
