URGENT UPDATE: Washington Township is making headlines by revitalizing the historic Thorington Schoolhouse, a landmark dating back to the 1840s. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Supervisor Sam Previti, just reached a significant milestone as the schoolhouse has been successfully relocated to a new five-acre site, becoming the centerpiece of the forthcoming Thorington Park.
Officials confirmed that the park will feature a play structure, a pavilion, and newly constructed pickleball courts, alongside an apple orchard made possible through generous donations from local orchardists. The township purchased the schoolhouse for $125,000 and received overwhelming support from the Board of Trustees for this transformative move, as reported by WWJ Newsradio and The Detroit News.
The relocation process was a considerable undertaking, with C & A Building Movers managing the intricate operation. Owner Fred Christian highlighted the challenges involved in safely hoisting the structure while disconnecting utilities, providing a fascinating glimpse into the complexities of preserving history.
“It’s a delicate operation, but we’re honored to be part of such an important project,”
Christian stated.
In addition to preserving the building, the initiative also has a strong educational component. Romeo High School students are actively involved in the construction and restoration efforts, gaining hands-on experience in historical preservation. Earlier discoveries made by students, including a 1930s fourth-grade test, further emphasize the school’s historical significance. Plans are also underway to restore the schoolhouse windows using period-specific wavy glass.
As Washington Township embarks on this exciting journey of revitalization, community members are invited to participate in the development of Thorington Park. The park is set to become a hub for local families, blending recreation with education and preserving a vital piece of local history.
Stay tuned for further updates as this remarkable project unfolds, marking a new chapter for both the Thorington Schoolhouse and the community it serves. This revitalization exemplifies the power of community engagement in preserving history while fostering future generations.
