UPDATE: The Salvation Army is urgently seeking toy donations to ensure 400 families in San Diego can celebrate Christmas this year. With only one week left before distribution begins, the organization is facing a severe shortage, falling hundreds of toys short of its goal.
Inside the Kroc Center warehouse, toys like basketballs, dolls, and art supplies are piled high, but the collection is far from sufficient. Glynis Eckert, the director of marketing for the Salvation Army Kroc Center, emphasized, “Even like a Barbie house, this is something that we’ll put aside specifically for a family that maybe we know had a bit extra difficult time this year.”
The demand is pressing, especially for older children. Janet Reade, the director of volunteers and community engagement, noted that donations predominantly cater to younger kids. “We are looking for toys for those older age groups,” she stated, as families of children aged 0 to 12 have pre-registered for assistance.
Time is running out! Parents from a pre-registered list will collect toys next week, with the goal of providing each parent with three to four toys per child. “We hope to have every parent be able to get three or four toys for their children,” Eckert added.
If the toy shortage continues, the Salvation Army will have to purchase toys out of pocket, which could jeopardize its broader mission of spreading holiday joy. The organization aims to provide families with a complete Christmas experience, including toys, gift wrap, bows, and food boxes to ensure they feel the holiday spirit.
Donations are being accepted urgently! You can contribute in person at the Kroc Center or online. Every toy counts, and your support can make a significant difference in a child’s Christmas this year. Donate now to help spread holiday cheer!
