UPDATE: Tampa residents are gearing up for a symbolic protest against rising electricity costs, with a “Burn the Bill Rally” set for Saturday morning, October 7, 2023, at 10 a.m. The event will take place at the Dr. Walter Smith Library & Museum, where local leaders, including U.S. Rep Kathy Castor, will address the crowd about the impact of TECO’s recent rate hikes.
Frustration is mounting among TECO’s 830,000 Florida customers, who have been grappling with some of the highest electricity rates in the nation after two significant hikes earlier this year. The increases—amounting to an additional $29 to $38 per month—have forced many residents to make tough choices between keeping the lights on or putting food on the table.
“We are standing up against these unfair rate increases that have burdened our communities,” said Rep. Castor in a statement. Local environmental advocate Walter L. Smith II will also join the rally, emphasizing the need for affordable energy solutions.
In response, TECO has defended its rate increases, attributing them to damages caused by the devastating 2024 hurricanes. A spokesperson stated, “To reduce the impact on customers’ bills, the costs were spread out over 18 months.” The company claims that after this period, the average residential bill for 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) will drop by about $20.
TECO has also announced a $2 million assistance fund aimed at helping struggling customers cope with rising costs. This financial support, sourced from shareholders, is administered by organizations such as Metropolitan Ministries, the Salvation Army, and the Catholic Charities Diocese of St. Petersburg. “We are committed to providing relief to those in need,” the spokesperson added.
Community leaders are urging residents to participate in the rally to voice their concerns and demand accountability from TECO. “This is about more than just bills; it’s about our families and our future,” Rep. Castor emphasized.
As the protest approaches, many Tampa residents are taking to social media to express their support and share their own stories of financial strain. The urgency of the situation is palpable, with many echoing a common sentiment: “We can’t afford to keep paying these outrageous rates.”
As the rally unfolds, all eyes will be on TECO’s response and any potential changes to its rate structure. Participants are encouraged to bring their power bills to symbolize their frustration with rising costs, highlighting the urgent need for affordable energy solutions in Tampa and beyond.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as it continues to impact the lives of Tampa residents.
