URGENT UPDATE: Sylvan Furniture, a beloved fixture in downtown Lewiston since the 1950s, is set to close its doors by April 30, 2024. A “Store Closing Forever” sign now hangs prominently in the window, signaling the end of an era for the iconic retailer.
The historic store, located at 815 Main St., will be acquired by another family-owned furniture business that plans to open in late summer or early fall after renovations. Rachel Rinard, who co-owns Sylvan Furniture with her husband, JJ, confirmed that while the current store will cease operations, the legacy of Sylvan will continue under new ownership.
Rinard expressed her mixed emotions, stating, “It definitely was not something we were looking for,” referencing how they were approached with the acquisition offer. The Rinards will maintain an office at the Sylvan warehouse for about one year post-closure to assist customers and fulfill outstanding orders.
The going-out-of-business sale, which commenced recently, features various popular items including power sofas and recliners equipped with USB ports for charging devices. New inventory is still arriving, including a unique offering called sound emulsion, designed for immersive seating experiences.
“We have a lot of people building homes right now,” Rinard noted. “We’re holding furniture for them until their homes are finished.”
Approximately 80% of sales at Sylvan Furniture come from special orders, which will be accepted for another six to eight weeks. The Rinards have enlisted a marketing agency to promote the sale, ensuring a robust social media presence separate from the store’s original pages.
The transition comes after the Rinards acquired Sylvan Furniture from second-generation owner Karen Shaul six years ago. During her tenure, Rachel has worn many hats, from bookkeeper to general manager, showcasing her deep commitment to the store and its customers.
As the final days approach, the community is buzzing with nostalgia and support for a store that has been more than just a retailer; it has been a cornerstone of local life. The upcoming changes promise new opportunities while preserving the Sylvan name and its reputation for quality.
As this story develops, customers and community members are encouraged to visit Sylvan Furniture before the impending closure to experience the store’s offerings one last time.
