UPDATE: The City of Santa Clarita just launched the holiday season with an exhilarating tree lighting ceremony at The Cube Ice and Entertainment Center on December 5, 2025. Mayor Bill Miranda took center stage, using a hockey stick to send a glowing puck across the ice, illuminating a large Christmas tree as the crowd counted down in excitement.
This year marks the fifth annual tree lighting at The Cube, a beloved community hub, drawing families and friends together for performances, skating, and festive cheer. The event is more than just a visual spectacle; it highlights the importance of the rink, which nearly closed in 2020 but was saved through community efforts and city intervention. The facility, purchased for $14.95 million, has since become a vital resource, hosting numerous local and regional hockey teams and figure skating programs.
Miranda expressed his gratitude after the successful puck drop, stating, “I didn’t think they would turn off the lights!” His enthusiasm mirrored that of the crowd, which filled the venue to celebrate not only the holidays but also the ongoing success of The Cube, which serves the Santa Clarita Valley and beyond.
The Cube is home to various organizations, including the UCLA Men’s Hockey Team and the West Ranch Hockey Club, providing a space for athletes of all ages. Councilwoman Marsha McLean emphasized the significance of keeping the rink alive, stating, “More people use The Cube than almost any other facility in the city.” The facility has become a destination for families and skaters, offering adaptive sports programs through SNAP Sports and hosting regional tournaments.
During the ceremony, special guests included Daryl Evans, former NHL player and L.A. Kings broadcaster, and mascots from the Los Angeles Kings, adding to the festive atmosphere. Attendees enjoyed a preview of the upcoming ice skating show, “A Nutcracker Fantasy,” set to premiere at The Cube this Friday, with additional performances scheduled throughout the weekend.
Miranda commented on the dedication of the young skaters, stating, “These skaters pour a lot of work and energy into getting good at their skill sets.” As families took to the ice, some newcomers wobbled while others glided gracefully around the illuminated tree, creating a heartwarming scene of joy and community spirit.
Looking ahead, city officials plan to enhance The Cube with upgrades, including a new Zamboni and bleachers, as they explore options to expand its multipurpose capabilities. For now, the community revels in the holiday spirit, united at The Cube, a place that continues to thrive thanks to the collective efforts of its residents.
As the celebration concluded, Miranda thanked the staff and volunteers who made the event possible, reinforcing the sense of community that The Cube fosters. This event is just the beginning of a vibrant holiday season in Santa Clarita, making it an urgent highlight for residents and visitors alike.
