UPDATE: New Yorkers woke up to a snowy morning on December 14, 2025, as the city received its first significant snowfall of the season. By 8 a.m., several inches of snow had already blanketed parts of the city, with more expected throughout the morning and afternoon.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for the metro area, set to remain in effect until 1 p.m. today. Total snow accumulations are forecasted to reach 3 to 5 inches, with some regions potentially seeing up to 6 inches. Meteorologists warn that these conditions will create hazardous travel situations, including snow-covered and slick roads.
“Slow down and use caution while traveling,” urged NWS officials, stressing the importance of safety during these conditions.
Temperatures will remain below freezing today, with a high of just 32 degrees and a low of 20 degrees. While snow is not expected for Monday’s commute, the freezing temperatures may lead to dangerous icing on streets and sidewalks, creating additional risks for pedestrians and drivers alike.
Under city law, property owners must clear their sidewalks within four hours after the snow ends, or face fines ranging from $100 to $150. Authorities emphasize the need for compliance to ensure public safety.
Meanwhile, the NYC Emergency Management team is closely monitoring the coastal storm that has brought this accumulating snow. Ground and air transportation have already felt the impact. By 8 a.m., delays were reported on the city’s 1, A, and R train lines.
Travelers should also be aware that some flights to LaGuardia Airport have experienced delays exceeding two hours due to snow and ice conditions. Departures may also be affected, according to the FAA. Similar delays are anticipated for both arriving and departing flights at JFK Airport.
