Montcalm Community College Enrollment Surges 16.2% This Fall

UPDATE: Montcalm Community College in Sidney Township has just announced a staggering enrollment surge of 16.2% this fall, reaching 2,035 students, marking a significant rebound from pandemic lows. College President Bradley Barrick expressed his astonishment at this growth during a board meeting on November 7, underscoring how far the institution has come in just a few years.

This increase places Montcalm Community College (MCC) at the forefront of Michigan’s community colleges, outperforming others such as Southwestern Michigan College, which reported a growth of 12% from 2024 to 2025. Compared to 1,414 students in the fall of 2020, this represents an impressive 44% increase in enrollment.

As the college gears up for the upcoming spring semester, Barrick revealed that 1,654 students are already registered, a rise of 16.54% compared to last year at this time. Additionally, the total contact hours—an essential metric for state funding—have surged by 18.83% over the previous year.

Among the enrolled students, a notable 704 are dual-enrolled high school students, surpassing last spring’s 664 students. Barrick described the situation as “mind-blowing,” adding, “I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re going to lead the state again in enrollment in the spring.”

The success is largely credited to the efforts of Francisco Ramirez, Dean of Student and Enrollment Services, and his dedicated team. Barrick emphasized their commitment to expanding enrollment, particularly in Ionia County, where partnerships with local high schools have grown significantly.

Enrollment at Belding High School in Ionia County, for example, has reached 88 students, making it the institution with the highest dual enrollment figures. Other participating schools include Tri County (59), Greenville (54), and Carson City-Crystal (42).

As MCC works to support its expanding student body, the college is also contemplating a physical presence in Ionia County to better serve students. Barrick noted ongoing discussions about potential partnerships, including opportunities with the Ionia County Career Center, to enhance accessibility for students facing transportation challenges.

Next steps: The college plans to continue monitoring enrollment trends and developing strategies to ensure all students have the resources they need. With the semester approaching, officials are optimistic about maintaining this upward trajectory, potentially reaching all-time highs not seen since 2009.

As enrollment figures continue to climb, Montcalm Community College is not only reshaping its future but also making higher education more accessible for students across the region. These developments are expected to resonate widely, making this a pivotal moment for the college community.
