UPDATE: Massachusetts taxpayers are set to receive significant rebates starting today, with payments ranging from $200 to over $7,000 for eligible individuals. Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration has confirmed that approximately 3 million taxpayers will benefit from this initiative as part of an automatic rebate triggered by a state revenue cap earlier this year.
These payments will be distributed between now and December 15, 2023. Taxpayers can expect to see a deposit labeled “MASTTAXRFD” in their bank accounts if they opted for direct deposit. Those receiving checks will have them mailed directly to their registered addresses.
Officials have indicated that 500,000 payments are scheduled for this week, with around 1 million more expected weekly thereafter. Most eligible taxpayers should receive their rebates this month.
For those who have not filed their 2021 tax returns, there is still time! You can submit your return by September 15, 2023, to qualify for the rebate. Once filed, eligible taxpayers will receive their refund approximately one month later.
The rebate amounts vary based on income, meaning higher earners will receive larger refunds. For instance, an individual earning $35,000 may receive around $200, while those with incomes exceeding $1 million could see refunds of $7,000 or more.
In addition to the rebate news, a new statewide ban on disposing of mattresses and textiles, including clothing and shoes, is now in effect. While officials have stated that they “generally” won’t impose fines on individuals, they are providing resources to help residents comply with the new regulations.
“This initiative will not only aid taxpayers but also promote recycling and responsible waste management across the state,” said an official from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
Furthermore, in a significant development in the criminal justice realm, authorities have identified the woman known as the “Lady of the Dune,” whose remains were discovered nearly fifty years ago in Provincetown. She has been confirmed as Ruth Marie Terry, a 37-year-old from Tennessee. This revelation may lead to new insights into her unsolved murder, as detectives continue to seek information regarding her killer.
As we approach the upcoming election, voters in Massachusetts are reminded that the deadline for ballot drop-off is today at 5 p.m.. Secretary of State Bill Galvin recommends that voters hand-deliver their ballots to ensure they are counted in time.
This is a rapidly developing situation with far-reaching implications for taxpayers and the community. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to follow these stories closely.
