Iowa Women’s Wrestling Set for Historic NCAA Championships This Weekend

UPDATE: The Iowa Hawkeyes are primed for a groundbreaking moment as they prepare for the inaugural NCAA National Championships this weekend at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, IA, on March 6-7, 2024. With a stellar dual record of 14-1 and over 30 champions crowned at various invitationals this season, excitement is building as they join 51 other programs in this historic event.

During a press conference held earlier today, officials, athletes, and coaches shared their enthusiasm for the championship, which will showcase 180 participating student-athletes from six NCAA Regional Qualifiers. Luke Eustice, Director of the Iowa City Area Sports Commission, expressed pride in hosting this landmark tournament, stating, “We are pleased, we’re proud, all those adjectives, to host this tournament. We think we’ll do a really good job.”

Among those representing the athletes was Iowa’s own Kylie Welker, who secured her spot at the championships after winning the title at 180 pounds during the Regional Qualifiers in Indianola, IA. Welker, a redshirt junior with an unbeaten record of 17-0, is set to face off against Genevieve An of Lehigh in her opening match. “I think it’s really special,” Welker remarked. “Just stepping out there knowing that we continue to make history and bring barriers down is really special.”

Coaches also weighed in on the significance of this competition. Head coach Clarissa Chun, appointed in November 2021, emphasized the importance of enjoyment and authenticity in competition. “I just really want our women to go out there, enjoy these moments, have fun, and be true to who they are,” Chun stated. “It’s a great weekend to celebrate women’s wrestling.”

The championship kicks off at 10 a.m. on Friday, with ten Hawkeye wrestlers among the competitors aiming to make their mark in history. This tournament not only represents a milestone for Iowa but also highlights the growing recognition of women’s wrestling at the national level.

As the countdown to the championships continues, fans and supporters are rallying behind the Hawkeyes, eager to witness this historic event. The stakes are high, and the excitement is palpable as Iowa gears up to showcase its talent on a national stage.
