BREAKING: Boston Police have seized over two kilograms of fentanyl and made five arrests in a significant operation prompted by rising community concerns about drug activity in the Southwest Corridor area. The operation, which took place earlier today, is part of a coordinated effort to combat the surge in drug-related incidents following the dismantling of the Mass and Cass tent city.
Authorities report that the investigation resulted in the seizure of not only fentanyl but also 32 rounds of ammunition, digital scales, drug packaging materials, and over $3,000 in cash. The Boston Police Department (BPD) stated, “As a result of the coordinated operation, officers executed several search warrants across multiple locations,” including addresses on 176 Stratton St. in Dorchester, 127 Hazelton St. in Mattapan, and 1059 Tremont St. in Roxbury.
The operation involved collaboration among various law enforcement units, including the Youth Violence Strike Force, Massachusetts State Police, MBTA Police, and Boston Housing Authority Police. The joint effort underscores the city’s commitment to addressing the escalating opioid crisis that has plagued areas like Mass and Cass and the surrounding neighborhoods.
Those arrested include Ricky Wilson Soto-Arias, 36, of Dorchester; Doris Baez, 37, of Mattapan; Bryan Mejia, 31, of Mattapan; Jeil Hernandez, 44, of Boston; and Stephen Smith, 37, of Boston. All except Smith have been charged with trafficking Class A drugs. Soto-Arias and Baez face additional charges for unlawful possession of ammunition, while Smith is charged on outstanding warrants related to breaking and entering and larceny.
Community members have expressed relief at the police action, highlighting the urgent need for intervention in an area grappling with increased drug-related violence and crime. The BPD’s proactive steps aim to restore safety and trust within the community, which has felt the strain of the opioid epidemic.
As this story develops, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The impact of this operation reflects a broader commitment to tackling the ongoing drug crisis and restoring safety in Boston neighborhoods.
