Spurs Superfan Group Strengthens Bond Between Father and Son

For dedicated San Antonio Spurs fans Paul and PJ Salazar, attending games at the Frost Bank Center has become a cherished ritual. The father-son duo recently joined a new superfan group called the “Jackals,” initiated by Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. The experience has not only deepened their love for the team but also strengthened their familial bond.

PJ, excited about their new role, expressed, “I just look forward to the games every single day.” His enthusiasm was palpable when they learned about the Jackals, stating, “The first time I heard about it, I said, ‘Wow, they’re having tryouts?’ We went to see if we could get a spot.” Now, they attend every home game, cheering for the Spurs and creating lasting memories together.

Paul Salazar reflected on the significance of this experience, noting, “Growing up, I didn’t get to meet as many players as he’s able to meet now. Doing it together is good for me, but it’s something he’s going to remember for the rest of his life.” Being part of the inaugural Jackals group has allowed PJ to be more social and open, which Paul finds deeply moving. “I just tell him to be himself. Right now, I’m watching him talk, and he’s being himself. It makes me very emotional to see that.”

The Salazars have transitioned from sitting in the upper tiers to enjoying closer views of the action. PJ was recently named Jackal of the Month for January, a recognition that underscores his growing involvement within the group. “We used to sit way up in the nosebleed seats, and now we’re down here,” PJ remarked. “It’s crazy, but I love it.”

Among the players, PJ holds a special admiration for Keldon Johnson, affectionately calling him “the one and only big body, Keldon Johnson or KJ, let’s go!”

The Salazar family exemplifies the deep connection many San Antonio residents feel towards the Spurs. For them, the team is not just a source of entertainment; it represents family, community, and a shared passion. As they continue to participate in the Jackals, Paul and PJ are not just fans; they are part of a vibrant community that celebrates the spirit of basketball and the memories it creates.
