The city of Tucson, Arizona, is engaging the community in a significant cleanup initiative known as the Team Up to Clean Up program. This collaborative effort focuses on revitalizing neighborhoods, particularly in the Northside area, where volunteers have come together to enhance the local environment and support those in need.
Volunteers from various organizations gathered at the intersection of E Fort Lowell Rd and N First Ave to actively participate in cleaning efforts. Among them was Robert Drummell, a resident of the Northside for nearly a decade, who expressed his appreciation for the community’s involvement. Drummell noted, “I’m glad to see that everybody is getting in this because it just gives you more incentive to come out, be with the people. Some people need help during these times, but it should be throughout the year.”
The Team Up to Clean Up initiative, organized by the City of Tucson’s Environmental Services, encourages residents to take ownership of their neighborhoods. Steven LaTurco, the Environmental Services Liaison, emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “It’s our part to work together with residents who are already cleaning parts of their community.” The program facilitates partnerships with local organizations, such as Old Pueblo Community Services, Mountain View Baptist Church, and the Violence Interruption and Vitalization Action program, all of which contributed to the cleanup efforts.
Community Outreach and Support
The cleanup efforts extend beyond litter collection. The city is actively reaching out to individuals in the area, including those experiencing homelessness. Azul Navarrete-Valera, a liaison for VIVA, highlighted the outreach component of the initiative. “With both residents and homeless individuals, we provide them with resources,” Valera explained. The outreach aims to foster connections by asking community members about their needs and suggestions for improvement. This approach encourages locals to communicate their difficulties and desires for community events or support.
Drummell reflected on the collective impact of the cleanup efforts, saying, “To see the city, the organizations, all these volunteers kind of come together and clean up and help this part of the community, it’s a very good thing.”
The Team Up to Clean Up program exemplifies the power of community engagement in enhancing local environments and providing essential support to residents. Those interested in participating can find additional information on the City of Tucson’s website. Through initiatives like this, Tucson is not only improving its neighborhoods but also fostering a sense of belonging and cooperation among its residents.
