Community spirit thrived at Sholan Farms in Leominster, Massachusetts, where more than two dozen volunteers gathered on November 12, 2023, to pack surplus apples for local families in need. This initiative resulted in the distribution of 3,200 pounds of apples, which were delivered to various food pantries, churches, and nonprofit organizations throughout the region.
The volunteers worked diligently to pack 80 bushels of apples into over 900 bags, ensuring that a variety of fresh produce would reach those facing food insecurity. Longtime resident and President of the Friends of Sholan Farms, Joanne DiNardo, emphasized the farm’s commitment to community support, stating that in the last 24 years, there have only been three instances where they could not donate apples due to crop failure.
“This year, we ended the season with an abundance of apples and were able to give back to the community,” DiNardo said. The local recipients of these apples included churches such as Our Lady of the Lake, St. Anna, and St. Leo, as well as organizations like the Leominster Veterans Center and the Rotary Club of Leominster.
Community Partnerships Enhance Holiday Support
The collaboration with local nonprofits was crucial this year, especially as Ginny’s Helping Hand reported a significant increase in requests for assistance. Executive Director Brandon Robbins highlighted the importance of Sholan Farms’ contribution, stating that the addition of over 200 bags of apples to their Thanksgiving baskets provided both nourishment and joy to families.
“Adding fresh, local apples to our Holiday Food Baskets of Hope brings both nourishment and a little extra joy to our neighbors,” Robbins remarked. “We’re incredibly grateful for Sholan Farms’ continued commitment to supporting our community.”
Additionally, Ginny’s Helping Hand received a generous donation of 5,440 pounds of nonperishable food collected through a drive at Fall Brook Elementary School. This effort highlighted the collective impact of community initiatives, as students and staff came together to support local families in need.
“Your kindness shows what happens when a community comes together — big hearts, helping hands, and kids leading the way,” Ginny’s Helping Hand shared on social media, expressing gratitude for the support received from local residents.
Acknowledgments and Community Impact
DiNardo also recognized the hard work of the volunteers who braved the cold to accomplish this significant task. She thanked orchard managers John Brannin and Mike Meehan, along with other volunteers, for their dedication during the harvest and packing process.
“What an amazing team effort,” DiNardo said, noting that the packing took place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on that Saturday. Her sentiments reflected a deep appreciation for the collective efforts that made this initiative possible.
“This is what a community farm is all about,” DiNardo concluded. “We take pride in all that we do and strive to be an important resource to the community.” The event at Sholan Farms not only provided essential food supplies but also reinforced the values of generosity and collaboration in the Leominster community.
