Oroville voters approved only one of four proposed changes to the Oroville City Charter during the November 2024 elections. In response to this outcome, the Oroville City Council is now considering placing additional ballot measures for a vote on November 3, 2024. This initiative aims to address outdated language within the charter while also seeking to reduce city expenditures.
The council’s previous attempts to amend the charter included measures that would have eliminated the treasurer position and revised the Parks Commission section. Both proposals were rejected by voters. A staff report indicated that shifting the responsibilities of the treasurer to city staff could save approximately $65,000 annually. Each proposed ballot measure is projected to cost around $30,000, prompting councilors to evaluate recommendations for necessary changes.
Additional Council Initiatives and Community Support
In addition to potential charter amendments, the council will discuss several community-focused initiatives. Among these is a proposed contribution of $5,000 to the Oroville Foundation of Flight to support a fly-in event. Furthermore, the council plans to waive fees for local museums during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations on February 21 and for Museum Weekend, scheduled from February 28 to March 1. Special fees for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Oroville Post 1747 will also be waived for an upcoming 5K event.
The council will stay informed on legislative updates, including recent changes to California law regarding e-scooters and e-bikes. An update on Oroville’s levee from the United States Army Corps of Engineers will also be presented.
