Andy Etzel Takes Charge as Fire Chief of Plymouth, Enhancing Leadership

The City of Plymouth has appointed Andy Etzel as the new fire chief, effective January 17, 2025. This decision marks a significant step in the leadership of the Plymouth Fire Department, where Etzel brings over 20 years of dedicated service and experience. Having previously served as assistant fire chief and interim fire chief, he is well-prepared to oversee the department’s operations and personnel.

Etzel’s promotion comes after a distinguished career that began in 2006 as a paid-on-call firefighter. Over the years, he advanced through various ranks, including lieutenant in 2010, captain in 2013, and battalion chief in 2016. His deep-rooted connection to the community, as a Plymouth native and graduate of Wayzata High School, positions him uniquely to lead a diverse team of full-time and part-time firefighters.

Commitment to Excellence and Community Trust

In his new role, Etzel will manage a team responsible for responding to a wide array of emergencies, including fires, medical calls, and traffic incidents. His leadership approach emphasizes creating a culture of excellence. “My priority will be continuing to create a culture of excellence where professionalism, pride, teamwork, and positive attitudes are expected, modeled, and reinforced at every level,” Etzel stated in a press release from the City of Plymouth.

City Manager Dave Callister and Public Safety Director/Police Chief Erik Fadden expressed their confidence in Etzel’s ability to lead effectively. Callister highlighted Etzel’s exceptional track record in building relationships within the fire department and the broader community. “Andy is humble and kind. He’s a great leader who will do an excellent job at the helm of the Plymouth Fire Department,” he remarked.

As he steps into this important leadership position, Etzel aims to foster a positive environment that not only enhances departmental operations but also strengthens community trust in the fire service. His extensive experience and commitment to service are expected to play a key role in shaping the future of the Plymouth Fire Department.
