Iris Apatow Talks New Role in The Hunger Games Prequel

The highly anticipated prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is set to expand the beloved franchise, with a release date of November 20, 2026. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film is based on a story by Suzanne Collins and features an impressive ensemble cast, including Iris Apatow in the role of Prosperina Trinket.

Following the success of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which grossed over $360 million globally, this new installment takes place 24 years before the events surrounding Katniss Everdeen. It focuses on a young Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, as he prepares to enter the lethal Hunger Games.

The film boasts a star-studded lineup that includes Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow. Notably, original franchise stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will also reprise their roles as Katniss and Peeta, adding to the excitement for fans.

During a recent interview at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, Apatow shared her experiences working alongside Fanning. “It was really, really surreal to work with her. I’ve always looked up to her since I was little,” said Apatow. She expressed gratitude for the supportive environment on set, which helped alleviate her nerves.

The film aims to delve deeper into the lore of Panem, exploring themes of survival and morality that have resonated with audiences since the franchise’s inception. Sunrise on the Reaping is expected to capture both the intensity and emotional complexity that characterized previous installments.

In addition to her role in The Hunger Games, Apatow is also set to appear in another film, Pretty Lethal, which will be released exclusively on Prime Video on March 25, 2024. Directed by Vicky Jewson, the action thriller follows a group of ballerinas trying to escape after their bus breaks down en route to a competition. The film features a talented cast, including Uma Thurman and Lana Condor.
