Sturgis Historical Society Launches Research on Local Education

The Sturgis and Meade County Historical Society is set to unveil its latest research initiative, titled “Education in Meade County, Past and Present,” during a special event called “Scoop of History.” The presentation will take place on February 28, 2026, at 1 PM at the Sturgis Public Library. This quarterly event aims to engage the community in exploring significant historical topics relevant to the Sturgis and Meade County area.

During the event, volunteers from the Historical Society will discuss their comprehensive research project, which focuses on the historic schools of Meade County. They will outline the project’s objectives, methodology, and some preliminary findings. Attendees will also have the opportunity to contribute their personal insights and documentation related to their experiences in local schools.

Community Involvement and Legacy Preservation

The Historical Society encourages community members to attend and share their memories, photographs, and artifacts that reflect their educational experiences and those of their ancestors. Scanning and recording services will be available for individuals wishing to preserve these invaluable contributions.

“While we will outline the objectives, resources, and early discoveries of our research, we hope that attendees will bring their photos, ephemera, and, most importantly, knowledge of the schools from the past 150 years,”

said a representative of the Historical Society.

This research project aims to document all known schools within Meade County, which once had as many as 200 separate educational institutions. Currently, the county is served by four school districts, a significant reduction from the original 93 districts, many of which housed multiple schools. While some schools have documented histories, the majority risk being lost to time without proper preservation efforts.

Betty Jo Huff, a board member of the Historical Society and the project coordinator, emphasized the urgency of community involvement. “The Historical Society will document the histories and memories of schools in towns such as Sturgis, Piedmont, and Faith, as well as the numerous isolated country schools. Memories, photos, and even school buildings still exist,” she noted. “But time is against us. Help is needed from residents who still know this disappearing legacy.”

Individuals interested in assisting with the project or sharing their knowledge are encouraged to contact Betty Jo Huff directly at [email protected] or by phone at (605) 490-5511.

The “Scoop of History” event promises to be a vital gathering for those interested in preserving the educational heritage of Meade County. All are welcome to participate in what is expected to be an enlightening presentation and a collaborative effort to safeguard the history of local education.
