Torrey Lawrence will step down from his role as provost at the University of Idaho (UI), effective June 2024. UI President Scott Green announced this leadership transition in a January 28 email to the university community. Following his departure as provost, Lawrence will continue his association with the university as a faculty member.
Lawrence’s tenure as provost began in March 2020 when he was appointed interim provost. He later became the permanent provost after a national search. Green acknowledged Lawrence’s contributions, stating he played a pivotal role in navigating significant challenges, including budget cuts, the COVID-19 pandemic, and institutional reaccreditation. Green highlighted the complexities of the situation faced by the university, including “the heinous capital crime on King Street” and the opportunity presented by the University of Phoenix.
Upcoming Leadership Changes
In the wake of Lawrence’s announcement, the university will initiate an internal search for an interim provost in the coming weeks. This process aims to ensure a smooth transition as the institution continues to focus on its strategic goals.
Additionally, Lawrence’s departure follows the recent resignation of Aviva Abramovsky, the Dean of the College of Law. Abramovsky has accepted a new position as president and CEO of the National Judicial College, located in Reno, Nevada. To fill the void left by Abramovsky, Diane Kelly-Riley, vice provost for faculty, will assume the role of acting dean until an interim dean is appointed.
The university has engaged the national search firm Buffkin/Baker to aid in the recruitment process for a new dean of the College of Law. This collaboration is expected to enhance the selection process and attract qualified candidates for the position.
As the University of Idaho undergoes these leadership changes, it remains focused on enhancing its academic programs and responding to the evolving educational landscape. The upcoming months will be crucial for ensuring continuity and stability as the institution navigates these transitions.
