Ignacio Bobcats Secure 17-Point Victory in Season Opener

The Ignacio Bobcats boys’ basketball team opened their season with a decisive 45-28 victory over the Del Norte Tigers on March 3, 2026. Playing at home in Rio Grande County, the Bobcats showcased a strong defensive strategy under the guidance of head coach Trae Seibel, who emphasized efficient ball movement and rebounding in the final quarter to secure the win.

Game Highlights

The Tigers managed to take an early lead by scoring the first basket of the game but quickly lost momentum. Ignacio responded to a 6-6 tie when junior Joseph Atencio hit a three-pointer, setting the stage for a run that would give the Bobcats a significant advantage. Assisted by senior Trace Crane, Atencio’s shot ignited a series of successful plays that saw Ignacio extend their lead to 14-6 after a three-pointer from senior Stoney White Thunder-Lucero.

Despite efforts from Del Norte’s senior Noah Bailey, who finished as the game’s top scorer with 14 points, the Tigers struggled to keep pace. Ignacio’s Rance Rathjen contributed significantly, scoring 10 points while also assisting in the team’s offensive plays. The first half concluded with the Bobcats leading 27-16 after a last-second rebound and putback by Crane.

Turning Point

The second half saw Ignacio maintain their dominance. Crane’s back-to-back putbacks early in the third quarter helped extend the lead to 35-19. White Thunder-Lucero further solidified the Bobcats’ position with a three-pointer, making the score 38-21. Del Norte’s attempts to close the gap were thwarted as Ignacio began the final quarter with a quick five-point run that effectively sealed the game.

Overall, Ignacio displayed strong teamwork and execution, finishing with a 7-of-15 record from the free-throw line, while Del Norte managed 2-of-3. The Bobcats’ rebounding was particularly impressive, with Crane grabbing 13 rebounds and Rathjen contributing 8.

Looking ahead, Ignacio will host the Sargent Farmers on March 7, 2026. Results from the Bobcats’ home game against Dove Creek were not available at press time. Additionally, a scheduled game for Aztec against Bayfield was postponed to March 6, 2026, due to inclement weather conditions.

This opening victory sets a positive tone for the Bobcats’ season, as they aim to build on their current record of 4-3 overall following this strong performance against Del Norte, now sitting at 1-5.
