The USD 457 Board of Education has approved an updated school calendar for the 2026-2027 academic year during its meeting on March 9, 2024. The new calendar introduces a revised schedule aimed at enhancing the transition for new teachers within the district.
An important change includes a morning session for students in grades elementary, fifth, seventh, ninth, and tenth, alongside those new to the district, scheduled for August 12, 2026. The first full day of school for all students will commence the following day, August 13, 2026.
Enhancing Support for New Teachers
The Calendar Committee put forth a recommendation to move the New Teacher In-service Day, originally set for March 29, 2027, to the beginning of the school year, now taking place on August 3, 2026. Feedback from new teacher surveys highlighted a clear need for additional support at the start of the academic year. Many new teachers expressed a desire for more time to acclimatize to their roles and the district’s environment.
The district previously scheduled three new teacher in-service days before school starts, along with additional days in January and March to meet the required training hours. Feedback from recent surveys consistently indicated that new teachers felt more prepared with extra time at the beginning of the year, enhancing their training and confidence as they begin their teaching careers.
Prior to the implementation of the three-day model, all five in-service days were concentrated at the beginning of the year, which many teachers found overwhelming. The adjustment aims to strike a balance, providing sufficient preparation time while allowing teachers to apply their training more effectively.

– August 7, 2026: In-service for all teachers
