Business Leaders Urge Immediate De-Escalation of Tensions in Minnesota

The leaders of major Minnesota-based companies, including Mayo Clinic and Hormel, have called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions following a recent fatal shooting involving federal agents. More than 60 CEOs signed a letter urging state, local, and federal officials to collaborate on effective solutions to the ongoing unrest.

This appeal comes in the wake of the death of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old man from Minneapolis, who was shot by federal Border Patrol agents on January 24, 2024. The incident, captured on video by bystanders, occurred near Nicollet Avenue and West 26th Street. It marked the third shooting involving federal agents in Minneapolis within three weeks.

Background of Recent Incidents

The recent surge of violence began on January 7, when Renee Good, also 37 and from Minneapolis, was killed in an incident that sparked widespread protests. Just a week later, another man was shot in the leg by federal agents. The series of events has raised significant concern among community leaders and business executives alike.

The letter released by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce emphasizes the urgent need for cooperation among officials at all levels of government. It states that the ongoing situation has resulted in “widespread disruption and tragic loss of life.” Key CEOs who signed the letter include Dr. Gianrico Farrugia of Mayo Clinic, Jeff Ettinger of Hormel, William Brown from 3M, Stephen J. Hemsley of UnitedHealth, and Michael Fiddelke, the incoming CEO of Target.

In addition to corporate leaders, several professional sports teams, including the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Wild, and Minnesota Timberwolves, have also expressed their support for the letter’s message.

Call for Peace and Cooperation

The letter articulates a desire for peace, stating, “In this difficult moment for our community, we call for peace and focused cooperation among local, state, and federal leaders to achieve a swift and durable solution.” It highlights the importance of enabling families, businesses, and communities across Minnesota to continue working towards a prosperous future.

Business representatives have been actively engaging with officials to promote real solutions, maintaining communication with the governor’s office, the White House, and local mayors. Their efforts aim to facilitate dialogue that can lead to effective governance and community safety.

On January 25, J.D. Vance, Vice President of the United States, visited Minnesota to participate in a roundtable discussion focused on restoring law and order. This event underscores the federal government’s commitment to addressing the escalating tensions in the region.

The letter concludes with a hopeful message, asserting that collaboration and dialogue can foster progress. The CEOs expressed their belief in the capacity of community leaders to come together to address the challenges facing Minnesota and to work towards healing and stability.
