St. Louis Offers Free Firewood to Residents This Winter

UPDATE: St. Louis residents can now access free firewood this winter through an initiative by the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. Firewood is available at select locations while supplies last, providing essential warmth during the colder months.

The program is currently operational at the lower Muny Opera Parking Lot in Forest Park, near the compost area off Holly Hills Drive in Carondelet Park, and north of Picnic Site #4 in O’Fallon Park. This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to sustainability and community support.

Parks Director Greg Hayes highlighted that the free firewood is sourced from city tree removal efforts, with wood being dropped off in the afternoons from Monday to Friday. Residents are encouraged to act quickly, as firewood is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Commercial vehicles or trailers are not permitted.

The program will run through early March 2026, contingent on availability. For those seeking more information, the Forestry Division can be reached at (314) 613-7200.

As winter approaches, this initiative not only aids residents in staying warm but also reflects the city’s proactive approach to utilizing resources efficiently. Residents are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to secure free firewood while supplies last.

Stay warm, St. Louis!
