Jack Moynihan Receives Lynnfield’s Prestigious Townsend Award

UPDATE: Jack Moynihan, co-owner of Moynihan Lumber and a cornerstone of the Lynnfield community, was awarded the Daniel Townsend Award for Excellence during a Select Board meeting on October 24, 2023. This honor recognizes his decades of dedicated service to the town and its residents.

Board Chair Phil Crawford emphasized that the Townsend Award is granted annually to a Lynnfield resident who exemplifies “excellence in volunteerism.” He stated, “We really look for people who have made decades of contributions,” highlighting Moynihan’s long-standing commitment to the community.

Moynihan was nominated by former Select Board Chair Chris Barrett, who praised him for his extraordinary contributions over more than 40 years. Barrett read from his nomination letter, stating, “Jack’s contributions to our community span over multiple decades…embodying the very essence of what it means to be a true community leader.”

The award is named in honor of Daniel Townsend, who sacrificed his life during the American Revolution on April 19, 1775. It serves as a tribute to those who have made profound impacts on the town.

Fellow Board member Dick Dalton reflected on Moynihan’s influence, noting, “It’s been 50 years of being a model citizen…they do things that they never seek any publicity for.” This sentiment resonates deeply with residents who have witnessed Moynihan’s tireless efforts.

Moynihan’s extensive volunteer work includes serving as Chair of the Comprehensive Housing and Planning Committee, where he developed crucial guidelines for prospective homeowners navigating local regulations. He also played a pivotal role in significant projects such as the Partridge Island initiative and the acquisition of the Lynnfield Center Golf Course.

His leadership on the finance committee was critical during challenging economic times, ensuring fiscal stability and the continuation of essential services in Lynnfield. Barrett noted that Moynihan has influenced the development of MarketStreet and has been instrumental in expanding local schools, including the founding of the town’s middle school.

In addition to his many accomplishments, Moynihan supports student athletes through the North Shore Student-Athlete Award, recognizing promising young talent monthly and offering scholarships for the Student-Athlete of the Year.

During his acceptance speech, Moynihan expressed gratitude to the Board, Barrett, and especially his wife, Hilda Moynihan, who has been a steadfast partner in their community efforts. “In all the roles I have been fortunate to take part in, there is one theme that runs through it all: service above self,” he remarked, underscoring the selfless spirit that defines his contributions.

This recognition of Jack Moynihan not only celebrates his past achievements but also inspires current and future generations to engage in community service. As Lynnfield continues to evolve, Moynihan’s legacy of excellence and commitment will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact.
