Ukraine and U.S. Reach Preliminary Agreement on Peace Proposal

Ukraine has reportedly reached a preliminary agreement on a peace proposal facilitated by the administration of former President Donald Trump. A U.S. official confirmed to ABC News that a Ukrainian delegation engaged in discussions in Geneva, resulting in a tentative understanding with U.S. representatives. This agreement could potentially bring an end to the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for nearly four years and is regarded as one of the deadliest in Europe since the Second World War.

The development follows secret negotiations held in Abu Dhabi on Monday, where Dan Driscoll, U.S. Army Secretary, met with Russian officials. According to the source, only “minor details” remain unresolved before a final agreement can be formalized. The official stated, “There are some minor details to be sorted out but they have agreed to a peace deal.”

Lt. Col. Jeffrey Tolbert, a spokesman for the U.S. Army, indicated that Driscoll’s team has been actively engaged in negotiations with Russian representatives throughout Monday and Tuesday, describing the talks as progressing positively. While neither Ukraine nor Russia has publicly confirmed their participation in the Abu Dhabi discussions, the U.S. has verified that Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Driscoll were in attendance.

Changes to Peace Proposal

The peace proposal, initially comprising 28 points, has since been revised to 19 key elements. Significant modifications include the removal of clauses concerning wartime amnesty and restrictions on the size of Ukraine’s military, which Russia had sought to limit to 600,000 troops.

Despite this progress, there are reports suggesting that the Russian delegation may reconsider their participation if the final terms differ significantly from those proposed by President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with Trump in Alaska last August.

The potential for a resolution to this longstanding conflict remains fragile. As negotiations continue, the international community watches closely, hopeful for a sustainable peace agreement that could reshape the geopolitical landscape in the region.
