Urgent: Tractor-Trailer Crash Closes I-205, Sparks Major Traffic Jam

UPDATE: A serious tractor-trailer accident has just closed all lanes of Interstate 205 near Mountain House, creating a massive traffic backup on Interstate 580. The crash occurred around 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, prompting authorities to respond urgently.

The California Highway Patrol reports that a tractor-trailer, transporting a dangerous mix of gasoline and ethanol, jackknifed on westbound I-205 just west of the Alameda County line. The incident led to a full closure of the freeway, affecting thousands of commuters in the area.

According to CHP Officer Tyler Hahn, one of the truck’s two tankers overturned, spilling approximately 3 gallons of the highly flammable liquid. Firefighters from Alameda County responded quickly, managing to stop the leak without any injuries reported. Remarkably, the driver of the tractor-trailer escaped unharmed.

As the situation developed, westbound traffic on I-205 was rerouted onto Mountain House Road, while eastbound traffic was directed onto I-580. Officer Hahn emphasized the importance of safety, stating, “The hazmat personnel have advised that, since the liquid is extremely flammable, the safe distance when pumping it from the tank is at least 1,000 feet from the spill.”

By 10 p.m., all lanes of eastbound and westbound I-205 had reopened, but the incident has caused significant delays and frustration for drivers in the region.

Motorists are advised to remain cautious and stay informed about ongoing road conditions. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are expected to provide further updates as necessary.
