Hermosa Beach Museum Expansion Approved: A New Era Begins

UPDATE: The Hermosa Beach City Council has officially approved the expansion of the Hermosa Beach Museum, marking a significant milestone for the local cultural hub. During a meeting on November 17, 2023, the council unanimously voted to grant a 10-year lease for the museum to continue operating at the Hermosa Beach Community Center.

Councilmember Raymond Jackson praised the museum, calling it “that gem that sits in the heart of our community.” This expansion is expected to bring transformative changes to the museum, which Director and Curator Jamie Erickson describes as “life-changing.”

“More space for staff, collections, and volunteers will enhance our ability to serve the community,” Erickson stated in an interview on November 18. Currently, the museum struggles with limited space, lacking a dedicated area for volunteer work, which is crucial for its operations.

According to Lisa Nichols, Community Resources Director, the area designated for the expansion previously housed city records, which have now been cleared out. This vacant space will undergo renovations in a phased approach that begins with health and safety upgrades, focusing on HVAC systems and compliant flooring. “We’re excited to implement climate and humidity control to protect our collections,” Erickson added.

The museum faces a fundraising challenge to support the renovations, but the extended lease provides much-needed security for long-term investment in the facility. “Having that 10-year lease gives us the assurance that we can make substantial improvements,” Erickson emphasized.

Plans also include creating a public collection storage and volunteer area, aiming to enhance community engagement. “It’s vital that our collections are accessible and visible, not just locked away. They belong to the community,” Erickson mentioned, highlighting the importance of transparency in museum operations.

A significant check-in will occur at the end of the third year of the lease to evaluate the museum’s progress in fundraising and permitting. Nichols stated this measure ensures the space remains active and does not remain vacant for extended periods.

The Hermosa Beach community eagerly anticipates the museum’s expansion as it fosters cultural enrichment and local pride. As fundraising efforts kick off, residents are encouraged to support the museum, which plays a crucial role in preserving and sharing local history.
