URGENT UPDATE: Starting as early as December 1, 2025, a critical section of the Virginia Capital Trail will be closed for essential bridge repairs. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a multiweek closure to replace the deck and substructure of the bridge located between mile markers 3 and 4 along the Jamestown leg of this vital 52-mile trail.
The closure will affect the trail along John Tyler Highway (Route 5), specifically from just east of Governor’s Landing Road to Heritage Landing Road. This section is expected to be closed for a period of two to three weeks, depending on weather conditions, which may alter the timeline.
As part of the bridge deck replacement, crews will install new composite decking boards designed with enhanced texture to improve friction, significantly boosting safety for both pedestrians and cyclists. This update is crucial for maintaining the trail’s accessibility and ensuring the safety of its users.
The Virginia Capital Trail serves as a shared-use path, connecting Jamestown to downtown Richmond, making it an essential route for recreational cyclists and pedestrians alike. In the future, a planned Trail757 project is set to further enhance connectivity by linking the Capital Trail with Colonial Williamsburg.
This closure is a significant development for local residents and visitors who rely on the trail for commuting and recreation. VDOT emphasizes the importance of using alternative routes during this construction period and urges all trail users to exercise caution.
Stay tuned for updates as work progresses, and check local resources for the latest information on the closure and reopening timelines. Your safety and the integrity of the trail are top priorities during these necessary repairs.
