New Simon Sanchez Campus in Yigo Breaks Ground After Long Wait

The long-anticipated construction of the new Simon Sanchez High School campus in Yigo officially commenced on Monday, marking a significant milestone for the community. After years of planning, the groundbreaking ceremony was held, transforming a long-held promise into reality. Governor Lou Leon Guerrero emphasized the importance of this development for the students, stating, “This has been a long time coming. The students of Simon Sanchez deserve a campus that reflects their spirit, talent, and potential.”

According to a press release from the Office of the Governor, the new facility will feature 87 classrooms, a new administration building, and a redesigned main entrance. This project aims to provide a modern educational environment, accommodating up to 2,000 students. The previous campus was closed following health and safety concerns after Typhoon Mawar in 2023, prompting students to attend classes at John F. Kennedy High School in Tamuning on a double-session schedule.

Transforming Vision into Reality

The project has been awarded to Core Tech International Corporation, which will construct the new campus with a focus on creating spaces for instruction, collaboration, and hands-on learning. The Governor’s office reported that the new campus will include a full-sized gymnasium, a spacious cafeteria, a dedicated JROTC classroom, and an auditorium designed to enhance school performances and events.

Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio remarked on the significance of the groundbreaking, stating, “So many students, alumni, and their families have waited for this day, and it is rewarding to see this project finally moving from talk to transformation.” He highlighted that the new campus represents “opportunity, dignity, and the future our students deserve.”

The decision to move forward with the project followed a thorough evaluation in accordance with Public Law 37-22 and the MA KÅHAT Act, which allowed for the necessary steps toward full demolition of the existing campus. The administration is committed to ensuring that the new facilities meet the needs of today’s learners while preparing them for future challenges.

Comprehensive Improvements Ahead

Beyond the educational facilities, the new Simon Sanchez campus will feature updated civil, electrical, telecommunications, and mechanical systems. The design will also include improved access roads and expanded parking, along with additional athletic facilities and recreational spaces.

As the community gathers to celebrate this pivotal moment, the transition from the old campus to the new one signifies a broader commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in the region. The Sharks community has long advocated for this change, with calls for a new campus dating back to 2013. With the demolition and construction officially underway, there is a renewed sense of hope for the future of Simon Sanchez High School and its students.
