Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy recently detailed an alarming antisemitic encounter he experienced while filming a pizza review in Starkville, Mississippi. During the incident, a young man approached Portnoy, shouting antisemitic slurs and throwing coins at him. This incident has renewed discussions about the role of social media in amplifying hate speech.
In an interview on “My View with Lara Trump,” Portnoy expressed his profound concern regarding the rise of hateful ideologies and the factors contributing to their proliferation. He attributed part of the problem to the lack of accountability for such behavior, particularly in educational settings. Portnoy believes that the anonymity provided by social media platforms exacerbates this issue, allowing individuals to express hateful views without fear of repercussions.
Social Media’s Role in Amplifying Hate
Portnoy described the internet as a “cesspool,” emphasizing that platforms like X and Instagram are breeding grounds for hate speech. He stated, “Social media has allowed what I would think faceless names who… live in a corner of their own lives, and they’re not normal people… to express themselves online.” According to Portnoy, these platforms foster echo chambers that validate and encourage hateful ideologies, enabling individuals to connect with like-minded people and creating communities that normalize hate speech.
The incident, which occurred in early March 2024, led to the arrest of Patrick McClintock, a 20-year-old former Mississippi State University student. McClintock was charged with disturbing the peace after he was allegedly heard shouting, “Hey, f— the Jews, f— you, Dave.” Despite this, Portnoy noted a positive public response, as bystanders confronted McClintock and many later apologized to him for the encounter.
While he appreciated the support, Portnoy emphasized that he is more interested in a broader societal rejection of antisemitism than in personal apologies. He called for a strong condemnation of such behavior, stating that he wants “outrage that this is happening.”

Portnoy highlighted the troubling trend of online anonymity, arguing that it emboldens individuals to voice opinions they would likely refrain from sharing publicly. He pointed out that he receives similar hateful messages daily on social media from users hiding behind anonymous profiles.
