Lynnfield Ceremony Honors Veterans, Inspires Future Generations

UPDATE: Community members in Lynnfield gathered on November 7, 2023, to honor local veterans during a moving ceremony at the Veterans Memorial. The event featured poignant speeches from both military and civilian leaders, underscoring the deep appreciation for those who defend freedom.

Emceed by Veteran’s Agent Bruce Siegel, the ceremony highlighted the experiences of the guest of honor, retired Army Capt. David Gallo, a native of Lynnfield. Gallo, who served in Desert Storm, captivated the audience with his reflections on the sacrifices made by veterans and the importance of honoring their legacy.

Phil Crawford, Chairman of the Select Board, delivered an impactful address, quoting poet G.K. Chesterton: “Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.” He emphasized that all veterans share a common bond through their unwavering commitment to freedom, regardless of the era in which they served.

Gallo, who enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1984 and rose to captain by 1997, shared personal stories that connected him to local heroes, including Lauren Lengyel, a U.S. Air Force captain from Lynnfield who endured six years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Gallo credited Lengyel’s bravery as a source of inspiration during his own military challenges.

“Not only do our veterans sacrifice for this country; their families do as well,” Gallo stated. He recalled the anxiety his wife felt as he prepared to deploy, highlighting the often-overlooked sacrifices made by military families.

Gallo concluded with a powerful message: “How we treat our veterans and honor them today will determine whether future generations are willing to serve. This impacts the security of our country and its people every day.” His words resonated deeply, reinforcing the community’s commitment to honoring those who serve.

This ceremony serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing our veterans and their families, inspiring a new generation to uphold the values of courage and service. As the community of Lynnfield reflects on this event, it continues to live out the principle that honoring veterans is essential for the future of the nation.
