New Affordable Housing Complex Opens Now in Ybor City

UPDATE: A new affordable housing complex has just opened in Ybor City, Tampa. The Casa Maceo Apartments, consisting of 10 units, was unveiled today, marking a significant step in addressing housing affordability in the area.

Developed by local entrepreneurs Dontavious Pittman, Ponce McNeal, and Kevin Johnson, this project received a $3 million grant in 2023 from the state’s affordable housing program. This initiative transforms a previously vacant lot on Columbus Drive into a vibrant community space, providing essential housing for families in need.

Mayor Jane Castor expressed her pride in the project, stating,

“This development is more than just new housing — it’s a testament to what happens when local visionaries invest in their own community to make Tampa a place where everyone can afford to live and thrive.”

This sentiment underscores the emotional and community-driven impact of the Casa Maceo Apartments.

The complex features all three-bedroom, two-bathroom units, specifically designed for low-income families earning 80% of the area’s median income (AMI) or below. For a family of four, this translates to an income of approximately $83,000. Notably, six units will be available at 50% AMI and below, further addressing the urgent need for affordable housing in the region.

Located at the border between East Tampa and Ybor City, the Casa Maceo Apartments are strategically positioned to offer residents both convenience and community. This initiative not only provides housing but also aims to foster a strong sense of belonging and support among its residents.

As housing challenges escalate nationally, local developments like Casa Maceo highlight innovative solutions that prioritize community and affordability. The opening of this complex serves as a model for similar projects across the country.

Residents and community advocates are encouraged to visit the site and explore the new opportunities offered by Casa Maceo Apartments. The impact of this project is expected to resonate throughout the Tampa area, setting a precedent for future developments aimed at improving housing accessibility.
