NYC Schools to Close for Veterans Day Holiday on November 11

New York City public and Catholic school students will have a day off on November 11, 2024, in observance of Veterans Day. This holiday honors the service of all military veterans, both in wartime and peacetime. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Day is dedicated to thanking those who have served honorably and acknowledging their contributions to national security.

All students in New York City, including those enrolled in Catholic schools under the Archdiocese of New York, will not attend classes on this day. Students will resume their studies on November 12, ensuring a brief but significant pause to recognize the sacrifices made by veterans.

Upcoming School Holidays

Following Veterans Day, students will have another break for Thanksgiving, with school closures on November 27 and November 28. Winter recess will commence on December 24, allowing students to enjoy the holiday season. The academic calendar for public schools typically includes approximately two dozen days off from the start to the end of the school year.

The calendar accommodates various religious and federal holidays. Notable dates include Good Friday, Yom Kippur, and Eid al-Fitr, along with periods for mid-winter and spring recess. Recently, Diwali has been recognized as a public school holiday.

In addition to these observances, schools also take breaks for Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Election Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, and Juneteenth. The school calendar also includes dates for parent-teacher conferences across elementary, middle, and high schools.
